Weddings in Byzantine Churches (FAQ)

The Holy Mysteries of the Church are otherwise known (in the Latin and Protestant Churches) as the "Sacraments".

The Holy Mysteries are rites proferred by the Church whereby those who seek the Lord in faith by Divine grace are enabled to encounter the Christ in a Salvific "Kairos"

"Kairos" is Greek, indicating a Special Graced Moment-Time of Divine Visitation.

Orthodoxy recognizes at least 7 Sacraments.

While these 7 Holy Mysteries are central and foundational, they are not necessarily all the sacraments recognized by the Church.

A fixed number of sacraments has not been defined by our Church.

Thus the Fathers name also as Holy Mysteries such as: Monastic Profession, Icons, etc.

In the New Testament era, those who encountered the Messiah during His earthly ministry, found salvation, forgiveness, healing, love, the Spirit, etc.

Likewise, we now in our own day, by means of the Holy Mysteries, mystically but no less really, are also enabled to encounter Christ Jesus and enter into those same Salvific Moments.

He who was visible as our Redeemer, has now passed into the Mysteries.

(St. Leo the Great, Pope of Rome and Patriarch of the Latin Church)
