ST. ELIAS UKRAINIAN HERITAGE SCHOOL

Mission Statement

The mission of the St. Elias Brampton Ukrainian Heritage Society is to further the understanding, knowledge, integration, innovation and appreciation of Ukrainian culture and traditions; and to provide for education for the benefit and enrichment of a culturally-diverse community. Investment of time at this point in the life of our children will pay big dividends in their future as Canadian citizens.

Mandate

The St. Elias Ukrainian Heritage School operates under the St. Elias Brampton Ukrainian Heritage Society. The mandate of the organization is to collaborate with the multi-cultural community on events to showcase Ukrainian art, literature, dance, history, language and cuisine.

A Brief School History

A year after the founding of the parish in 1976, several mothers met to establish a "Sadochok" nursery school for the children of our community. This soon expanded into a Heritage School, where our children were offered instruction in Ukrainian Language, Folk Songs, and Religion. Later, Ukrainian Dancing was added to the programme.

Over the years, hundreds of our children have benefited from a gentle and loving presentation of the spiritual and cultural heritage of our community. We look forward to creating many more memories in the years to come.

Curriculum

The Ukrainian Heritage classes offer a wide range of activities, with instruction in Religion, Language through singing, and Arts and Crafts. Ukrainian Dance instruction forms an important component in the childrens' cultural and social development.

When & Where

The Heritage School parallels the regular Public School program, running from September to June. Every Friday night, between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm (earlier dismassal for the younger students), the children and their parents gather at the St. Elias Parish Hall.

Enrolment is aimed at children ages 4 - 13 (Senior Kindergarten through Grade 8.) High School aged students are encouraged to continue (and enjoy) Ukrainian Dance instruction (as per below.)

There are 2 Dance Ensembles:

Iskra - for the younger dancers.

Vatra - for the older students.

For older youth (High School students), Ukrainian Dancing is offered by Mr. Kuziw every Monday evening from 6:30 to 9 p.m. from February to June.

The highlight for the participants is the ability to perform publically at various venues, including (but not limited to) the December St. Nicholas Concert, the Carabram Ukrainian Pavilion, the Brampton Cultural Festival, other local festivals, as well as occasional special Tours elsewhere in Canada and abroad... including the Dauphin (Manitoba) Ukrainian Heritage Festival, and the 1990 tour of France!
