PLANNING YOUR CHRISTMAS EVE
ЯК ХОДИМО ДО ЦЕРКВИ У СВЯТВЕЧІР

As Christmas approaches, take some time to plan out which services you will be attending. We are expected not only attend Church on Christmas day, but especially on the eve of the feast - December 24th. It may not be possible for you to attend all these services, but please choose (at least) one to attend. To help you navigate the liturgical schedule, here is an explanation of the services of Christmas eve. For more resources and schedule visit our website.

ROYAL HOURS (10 AM - 12 PM) As the last service of Advent, the Royal Hours summarise all the themes surrounding the Nativity, and present them as a last and solemn proclamation. In the special psalms, hymns and biblical readings prescribed, the joy and power of Christ's Coming are announced. This service is one of meditation on the cosmical meaning of the birth of Jesus, on the decisive and radical change it performed in all of creation.

VESPERS+DIVINE LITURGY (3 PM - 5:30 PM) This service inaugurates the celebration of the feast itself, for, as we know, the liturgical day begins in the evening at Vespers. The tone of this celebration is set by the five stichera on "O Lord, I cry...." What they really are is an explosion of joy for the gift of Christ's Incarnation which is now fulfilled! Eight biblical readings reveal that Christ is the fulfilment of all prophecies, that His Kingdom is the Kingdom "of all ages," that all human history finds its meaning in it, and the entire cosmos its centre. The Liturgy of St. Basil which follows Vespers and after a day of abstinence from food we receive Holy Communion. At the end of the Liturgy, the celebrant, taking a lighted candle to the very centre of the Church, and surrounded by the entire congregation, intones the Troparion of the feast "Your Nativity, O Christ our God”.

THE VIGIL OF CHRISTMAS: COMPLINE+MATINS (9 PM- 11:00 PM) Vigil begins with Great Compline and the joyful proclamation from Isaiah "God is with us!" At Matins we hear the Canon "Christ is born," one of the most beautiful pieces of liturgical hymnody, is sung while the faithful venerate the icon of Christ's Nativity and receive anointing. Bring your children (and their blankets); let them fall asleep as Christ did to the angelicsinging of "Glory to God in the highest."

Благочестиві хри- стияни присутні на службах не тільки на сам день Різдва, але і напередодні свята (24-го грудня). ЦАРСЬКІ ЧАСИ (10:00 - 12:00) Як остання служба Пилипівки, Царські Часи підсумовують усі теми, що стосуються Різдва, та представляють їх як останнє й урочисте проголошення. У спеціальних псалмах, гімнах та біблійних читаннях, що передбачені законом, сповіщається про радість і силу Пришестя Христа. Ця служба є роздумом над космічним значенням народження Ісуса, над вирішальною та радикальною зміною, яку воно здійснило в усьому творінні.

ЛІТУРГІЯ У СВЯТВЕЧІР (15:00-17:30) поєднується з вечірнею. Слід зазначити, що богослужбовий день починається з вечірні, тому ця служба відповідає вже наступному дню - тобто, Різдва Христового. Це є вечірня Різдва Христового, за якою співають красиві та глибокі за змістом стихири та читають вісім пророцтв Старого Завіту. Після цих читань одразу починається літургія - читається Апостол та Євангеліє (розповідь євангеліста Луки про Різдво Христове), і далі за чином відправляється літургія.

РІЗДВЯНЕ БДІННЯ, (21:00-23:00) що служиться ввечері 24 грудня, починається з Великого Повечірʼя - це служба, що правиться "після вечері". Співаємо величний гімн "З нами Бог", де устами пророка Ісаї сповідується велич Бога серед усіх народів землі. На літії благословляють хліб, пшеницю, олію та вино. Далі починається Утреня, за якою читають розповідь євангеліста Матея про Різдво Христове. Батьки, принесіть своїх дітей на цю службу (і нехай вони приносять свої ковдри), нехай заснуть, як Христос у вертепі під ангельську пісню «Слава во вишніх Богу"....

As was announced at Liturgy several weeks ago, Bishop Bryan has decreed the Gregorian Calendar as the common Eparchial Ecclesial Calendar. If you haven't already read the information in the church hall... please read the decree linked here, along with a letter from Fr. Tom about how this impacts our parish.

DONATIONS FOR 2025 INCOME TAX RECEIPTS
We must receive them by December 31, 2025. Do you want to support something specific at the end of this year? Consider our 2024 project to sponsor our existing vestments and icons. The list of what is yet to be sponsored can be found HERE.
